Near the Zurriola Beach, two translucent glass cubes give Donostia-San Sebastián a different image. These are the cubes of the Kursaal Congress Palace and Auditorium.
The people from Donostia talk about 'the cubes' when they want to refer to the Kursaal Palace. The two concert halls shape it as two irregular cubes, 'two beached rocks', as the designer, Rafael Moneo, Pritzker Architecture Prize, says. Ten thousand translucent glass plates cover the cubes. As the building is located in the Urumea River's mouth and over the Zurriola Beach, these plates they change their colours during the day and surprise the walkers again with their night lighting.
The Kursaal is the epicentre of the congress and cultural activity of Donostia-San Sebastián. The International Film Festival, the Musical Fortnight, and the Advertising Festival 'El Sol' are some of the events celebrated here.
