Increase in the number of overnight stays in Guipuzcoa in 2009 in spite of the crisis

The increase has been noted both in agrotourism and in hotels.
2010/01/22. In spite of the difficult economic situation, Guipuzcoa is the only region in the Autonomous Basque Community that has experienced an increase (0.4 %) in the number of overnight stays during 2009. The increase has been registered more especially in hotels (0,3%) but also in agrotourist establishments (0.1%).
Although the number of tourists has decreased (1%) compared to 2008, there has been an upturn in the number of visitors from Madrid and Catalonia as well as the French Basque Country and the south east of France.
The aim of the Department of Sport and Overseas Action of the Autonomous Government is the deseasonalisation of tourism in Guipuzcoa, so that a greater number of overnight stays and affluence of visitors is achieved in off-season times, not Easter or summer.
