2009/12/30. Coinciding with the Jacobean Holy Year 2010, the first Interpretation Centre of the St. James Way opens its doors in the Basque Country, in the renovated Iturriaga palace in the old part of Orio. The building is also the main tourist office in the town.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Orio underwent significant development, directly related to the coastal route of the St. James Way. Passing through Mendizorrotz, coming from San Sebastian, pilgrims crossed the town on their way to Zarautz. To get to the other side of the estuary pilgrims had to cross the water, having the royal privilege of being exempt from paying the "maravedi" (old coin).
At the present time Orio continues to be a stopping-off point for pilgrims on their St. James Way. The hermitage of San Martin of Tours, the church of San Nicolas of Bari and the historic centre of Orio are considered as monuments and places attached to the Coastal St. James Way.
