Located halfway between Oñati's urban area and the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, the Arrikrutz Cave was opened in June 2007 to show, in an enjoyable guided tour, it’s amazing geological formations and the animals that inhabited the cave in the Pre-history, such as the Cave Lion.
The cave is located in the Oñati-Arrikrutz karst system, beneath the Aizkorri Massif. It is part of the biggest cavity in Gipuzkoa, with 15 kilometres of interconnected galleries and six floors.
Arrikrutz is a space with a great charm due to its speleological, archaeological, and palaeontological interest. The space has witnessed many discoveries, such as the complete skeleton of a Cave Lion -the first discovery of this kind in Spain-, skulls of panthers, or a bear deposit.
Oñati's Town Council has created a tourist resource in the gallery 53, with 500 metres of length and a drop of 55 metres. During an enjoyable guided tour of an hour, the visitors can admire the whimsical shapes that the water has sculpted into the rock for centuries, like the big stalactites hanging from the ceiling.
The guided tour allows discovering other richness of these cavities. For example, the underground river and the mythology around the Sandaili Cave.
